Editio Princeps: Hvgonis Grotii De Ivre Belli ac Pacis (Paris, 1625)
I had the enormous good fortune to visit the Law Library of the Peace Palace in The Hague. One of my goals during my visit was to witness an authentic 1625 - an original first edition print of Grotius's most important work. I learned a great deal from Mark Somos's census project (which included my 1646 in the census). Some immediate observations: The text is larger and easier to read. It is also heavier than the later Amsterdam editions. I can easily put the 1646 into my backpack when I bring it into the classroom to teach. I probably could not do that with 1625, which perhaps was meant to be a shared reference work.
